Form 2290 filing for accountants and bookkeepers
If you keep the books for even a handful of carriers, Form 2290 is a August problem that arrives every year with no warning and no margin. It is a small return with a hard deadline, a document the client cannot register a truck without, and a rejection code that means nothing to anybody who does not file them regularly.
The job as it actually is
Where this goes wrong
Form 2290 is rarely anybody’s main engagement. It is the return that turns up alongside the bookkeeping, usually in the last week of August, usually for a client who has just bought a truck and does not know that the clock started the month they first drove it.
The specific difficulty is not the arithmetic. It is that a rejected return is not a tax problem, it is a registration problem: the client cannot renew a plate without the stamped Schedule 1, so a name-control mismatch on the 30th of August becomes a truck standing still on the 1st of September.
And the work does not stop at the annual return. Mid-year purchases, sold units, VIN typos copied off a title, suspended vehicles that went over 5,000 miles — each is a different filing with its own deadline, and each one lands on you.
What the platform does
Built for filing more than one return
Every item here is shipped today. Where something is not built, this site says so rather than describing a screen you cannot open.
Every client under one login
Each client is a separate business profile with its own EIN, address, officer details and filing history. You switch between them; you do not keep separate logins, and you do not retype a taxpayer’s details every July.
Last year’s fleet, reused
Add from filing history pulls the vehicles from a client’s previous return so the annual filing is a review rather than re-entry. For a new client with a real fleet, a CSV upload adds every VIN at once and flags the rows the IRS would reject before they are transmitted.
The rejection code, in plain sight
When the IRS rejects a return the platform shows you the actual error code rather than a generic failure. Correcting and retransmitting carries no additional filing fee, so a name-control mismatch costs you time and not a second bill to explain to the client.
The whole 2290 surface, not just the annual return
Amended returns for a weight increase or a suspended vehicle that exceeded its mileage limit, VIN corrections, and Form 8849 refund claims for sold, destroyed or stolen units are all handled here rather than being the thing you send somewhere else.
Records that survive the engagement
Stamped Schedule 1s stay on file in the account. When a client calls in February because a DMV wants last July’s copy, it is in the same place it was in July.
Questions
The things you will want to know first
The free tax calculator and deadline calculator need no account and are useful to hand to a client mid-conversation.
Can I file for several clients from one account?
Yes. Add a business profile per client — each carries its own EIN, legal name, address and filing history — and file from whichever one you are working on. There is no separate login per client and no per-seat charge.
Who signs the return?
The taxpayer does, with their own five-digit IRS self-select PIN. Federal law requires the taxpayer’s signature on Form 2290 and no amount of automation removes it. You prepare and transmit; the PIN is theirs.
What happens if a client’s return is rejected?
You get the IRS error code, correct the return, and retransmit at no additional filing fee. The most common rejection by far is a name-control mismatch — the business name not matching what the IRS holds against that EIN — which is fixable in a couple of minutes once you know that is what it is.
Do you offer a commission or revenue share?
There is no published partner commission programme, and rather than invent one on a web page: if you file at volume and want to discuss terms, email support@bks2290.com and you will get a real answer from someone who can give one.
What does it cost?
Filing starts at $6.95 for a single vehicle and is banded by fleet size above that. The current rate card is on the pricing page, which reads from the live price list rather than repeating it.
Start with one client
Create an account, add a business profile, and file a return. Nothing is charged until you transmit, so the first one costs you a few minutes and nothing else.
