Form 2290
Form 2290 filing made simple
The Heavy Vehicle Use Tax return, prepared and electronically filed by an IRS Authorized e-file Provider. You review the figures and sign; everything either side of that is ours.
What is Form 2290?
Form 2290 is the federal return that reports the Heavy Highway Vehicle Use Tax. It covers highway motor vehicles with a taxable gross weight of 55,000 pounds or more that are used on public highways, and it is filed with the IRS once per tax period.
When the IRS accepts it, you receive a stamped Schedule 1 listing your vehicles. That document is what a state DMV asks for before it will register or renew a heavy vehicle.
Who must file?
Whoever the vehicle is registered to. That is usually the owner, but under some leases it is the lessee. If the vehicle is 55,000 pounds or more and runs on public highways, a return is due — including for vehicles you expect to run under the mileage limit, which are reported as suspended with no tax owed.
An EIN is required. A Social Security number cannot be used on Form 2290, and a newly issued EIN can take a couple of weeks before it is usable for electronic filing.
When is it due?
The tax period runs 1 July to 30 June. For a vehicle already in service at the start of the period, the return is due by 31 August. For a vehicle first used later in the period, it is due by the last day of the month following the month of first use, and the tax is prorated across the remaining months.
See the full deadline tableWhat information is needed?
Your business name exactly as the IRS holds it against your EIN, the VIN and taxable gross weight of every vehicle, the month each was first used in the period, and a 5-digit self-select PIN to sign the return with.
A mismatch between the business name and the EIN is the most common reason a Form 2290 is rejected, which is why we check it before transmitting rather than after.
How BKS helps
We take the vehicle details however they reach us — a spreadsheet, a photo of the titles, last year’s Schedule 1 — and build the return from them. Weight categories, logging rates, mileage suspensions and any Line 5 credits are ours to get right.
The finished return is validated against the IRS schema before it is transmitted, so schema errors are caught here rather than coming back as a rejection. You review the figures in plain English and sign with your own PIN.
If the IRS rejects the return
We read the error code, correct the return and transmit it again at no additional filing fee. Most rejections are a name-and-EIN mismatch or a duplicate return for the same period, and both are fixable the same day.
VIN corrections
A VIN typed incorrectly on a return the IRS has already accepted cannot be edited — the return is filed and the Schedule 1 was issued against it. The fix is a VIN correction filing, which produces a new stamped Schedule 1 carrying the right VIN. It is priced below a new return.

Tell us about your fleet
Your EIN, the vehicles, and when each first hit the road. A spreadsheet, a photo of the titles or last year’s Schedule 1 all work.
02
We prepare your return
We build the Form 2290, compute the tax by weight category and check it against the IRS schema before anything is transmitted.
03
You review and sign
We send the return with the figures explained in plain English. You authorise it with your own 5-digit IRS PIN, because federal law requires the taxpayer’s signature.
04
We file with the IRS
Transmitted through IRS Modernized e-File under our own EFIN, not handed to a third party to send on our behalf.
05
Your records stay organised
The stamped Schedule 1, the return and the IRS acknowledgement stay in your account. When a DMV or an auditor asks, the document is already there.
Questions
Form 2290 questions
What is Form 2290?
Form 2290 reports the federal Heavy Highway Vehicle Use Tax. It applies to vehicles with a taxable gross weight of 55,000 pounds or more that use public highways, and it is filed with the IRS for a tax period running 1 July to 30 June.
Who needs to file Form 2290?
Whoever the vehicle is registered to. That is usually the owner, but it can be a lessee depending on the lease. If your vehicle is 55,000 pounds or more and runs on public highways, a return is due even when the vehicle is suspended and no tax is owed.
When is Form 2290 due?
The tax period runs 1 July to 30 June. For a vehicle already in use at the start of the period, the return is due by 31 August. For a vehicle first used later in the period, it is due by the last day of the month following the month of first use.
What information do I need to file?
Your business name and EIN exactly as the IRS holds them, the VIN and taxable gross weight of each vehicle, the month each was first used in the period, and a 5-digit self-select PIN to sign with. A Social Security number cannot be used in place of an EIN.
How does BKS file Form 2290?
We prepare the return, check it against the IRS schema, and transmit it through IRS Modernized e-File as an IRS Authorized e-file Provider under our own EFIN, rather than passing it to a third party to file on our behalf.
How do I receive my Schedule 1?
The IRS returns the stamped Schedule 1 on acceptance, and it appears in your account alongside the return and the acknowledgement. It stays there, so it can be produced again when a DMV or an auditor asks.
What happens if the IRS rejects my return?
We read the error the IRS returned, correct it and transmit again. Most rejections are a mismatch between the business name and the EIN the IRS holds, or a duplicate return for the same period. We do not charge our filing fee twice for the same return.
Can BKS correct a VIN?
Yes. A VIN typed incorrectly on a return the IRS has already accepted needs a VIN correction, which is a separate filing type rather than an edit to the original. It is priced below a new return.
