| W | Suspended — 5,000 miles or less (7,500 agricultural) | $0.00 | $0.00 |
Note the boundary at the top of the table, because it is the one most often got wrong: a vehicle at exactly 75,000 pounds is Category U at $540, and Category V at $550 is for vehicles over 75,000. The letter is what a state DMV reads off your Schedule 1, so the wrong one is not a rounding problem.
Questions
About the Form 2290 tax
The rules behind the number above.
Need the date rather than the amount? The deadline calculator works out when your return is due, including the five dates a year that move off a weekend or federal holiday.
How is the Form 2290 tax actually calculated?
The tax is set by the vehicle’s taxable gross weight, not by what it earns or how far it runs. Category A starts at exactly 55,000 pounds and costs $100 for the full period, and every additional 1,000 pounds adds $22, up to a maximum of $550 for any vehicle over 75,000 pounds. If the vehicle was first used after July, the tax is prorated over the months remaining in the period.
What counts as taxable gross weight?
Three things added together: the unloaded weight of the vehicle fully equipped for service, the unloaded weight of any trailers or semitrailers customarily used with it, and the weight of the maximum load customarily carried. It is not the weight on the scale that day, and it is not the registered weight if that is lower than what you actually run.
My truck went into service in November. Do I pay the full year?
No. A vehicle first used in November is taxed for eight of the twelve months, so a Category V truck pays $366.67 rather than $550. The return is due at the end of the month following first use, which for November is December 31.
What if I drive under 5,000 miles?
A vehicle you expect to run 5,000 miles or less during the period is suspended and owes no tax — 7,500 miles for agricultural vehicles. It is still reported on the return and still appears on your Schedule 1, which matters because the Schedule 1 is what proves to a DMV that the vehicle was declared. If it later goes over the limit, the tax becomes due for the whole period and you file an amended return.
Does this calculator include your filing fee?
No, and deliberately. The figure here is the tax the IRS charges, which you pay to the IRS. The BKS filing fee is separate and starts at $6.95 for a single vehicle. Folding a service fee into a number labelled “your 2290 tax” would mean the total here no longer matched line 4 of your actual return.
Is the logging rate really 25% off?
Yes. A vehicle used exclusively to transport products harvested from a forested site, and registered as such, is taxed at 75% of the standard rate for its weight category. It is a rate reduction inside the same category, not a separate category, so the letter on the Schedule 1 does not change.
