How it works
Our process
Seven stages. Everything saves as you go, so you can pick it back up at any of them.
01
Business & tax period
Taxpayer name, EIN, address and the period you are filing for.
02
Vehicles, payment & signature
Add your vehicles, claim any credits, choose how the IRS tax is paid, and sign.
03
Review & consent
Proof the Schedule 1, then give §6103(n) consent.
04
Checkout
Pay the filing fee and transmit to the IRS.
Two payments, and they are not the same
This is the thing that confuses people most, so it is worth stating plainly. There are two separate amounts:
- The Heavy Vehicle Use Tax, which you owe the IRS. You can authorise the IRS to debit your bank account as part of the filing, or pay it yourself through EFTPS or by card. It never passes through us.
- Our filing fee, a flat amount by fleet size, paid by card at checkout. See fees.
Paying us is not paying the IRS. If you choose EFTPS or card for the tax, it stays unpaid until you go and pay it, and IRS penalties run from the deadline regardless of when you filed.
You sign it, not us
Federal law requires the taxpayer to sign the return. You do that with a 5-digit IRS self-select PIN you choose yourself. We prepare and transmit; the signature on the penalties-of-perjury declaration is yours.
What comes back
Once the IRS accepts the return, your stamped Schedule 1 appears in your account. That is the document a state DMV asks for at registration. It stays available to download, along with the full return and the IRS acknowledgement.
If the IRS rejects it, we show you the error code and what it means. You correct and resubmit, and we do not charge the filing fee again. The guide to rejected returns explains what each of the common codes actually means.
Before you start
Two things are worth knowing before the first screen, and both are free to work out: what the Heavy Vehicle Use Tax will be for your vehicles, and the exact date your return is due. Neither needs an account. If you have not filed before, who has to file and the EIN requirement are the two that catch people out — a new EIN takes about four weeks before it can be used to e-file, which is the one delay nobody can shorten.
